My latest go to

I have recently converted over to a person who does not wash their hair every day. I know, some people think that is completely gross, my husband being one of them.  I never thought I would be that person, my hair has always been such a greasy mess.  I envied my friends who could go days without washing their hair and it would still look perfect on day 4.

I have always read that not washing your hair daily is healthier because of the natural oils that your hair creates in between the washes.  Well, I could wash my hair at night and by mid-day the following day it would start to look greasy and stringy.  So I would wash it every day.

I have learned that you can totally train your hair and by doing so it doesn’t get greasy nearly as fast.  I now go 3-4 days without washing it and it ends up feeling fuller and so manageable for cute braids (which I love!).  I looked high and low for a good dry shampoo to make this possible for me and tried so many without feeling satisfied.  I bought some of the most expensive ones thinking that they would do the trick but they never did.  I finally started using Not Your Mother’s, Clean Freak Dry Shampoo.  It is seriously life changing!

Being a brunette I always found that most dry shampoos left a filmy white residue on my hair but this does not.  My hair does get greasy in between washes (not nearly as bad as it used to though) and my go to, in between these washes, is Clean Freak.  Not only is this a product that works amazingly well but you can’t beat the price.  Depending where you buy it, you can get it for around $5-6!  The can is pretty big too and even with how often I use it, it lasts me a while.

Here are some pictures I took with my hair on day 3 of not being washed.

My Unplanned Girls Night Out

Do you ever have those nights where you plan on going home and getting comfy and relaxing and you end up going out on the town instead?!  Well that was my Friday night.  I met my girlfriend for dinner at one of our fave little NYC gems, Zest.  She used to live in the city but moved back to Buffalo so whenever she is in town I have to see her and it usually involves us going to Zest for dinner.  Zest is this tiny little sushi place that has an AMAZING happy hour deal.  Tuesday – Friday 3:30 pm – 7:00 pm and Saturday-Sunday 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm they offer a menu where everything is $3.50, including Sake and Wine.  They also offer veggie sushi so now that I am Vegan I was still able to eat there! It is a place I recommend if you like sushi and good deals, the sushi is pretty awesome for the price.

Some of our other friends met us at dinner and started talking about what they were doing at night.  Before you know it they convinced me to spend the night and hit up some fun spots with them.  Normally I hate doing this last minute since I am never prepared with something to wear, contact case, face wash etc.!  But I have always lived by the motto “You only live once” (even before Drake termed it YOLO).   Plus my friend had outfits for me to choose from so it worked out perfect.  Those nights sometimes end up being the best nights, we had a ton of fun!  We ended up going out around Nolita and went to a place that played great music and had a fun atmosphere.  We had these really fun Emoji masks that we ended up bringing out with us and taking pictures with, this was definitely after a few drinks lol.  I got to capture a few pictures from the night so I thought I was share them.

What did you do this weekend?

Ipsy Glam Bag Mascara update

So I got to try the Hello Lashes mascara by It Cosmetics this morning.  I made sure that my lashes were completely clean this time.  I am not sure I like it as much as I thought I would.  It seems to get rather clumpy on the lashes and does not separate them as much as I would like.  I took these picture to show an example of how they came out.  They do not look awful but not sure it is a product that I would go out and purchase now.  I feel in pictures they do not look as bad because they do add volume and length but up close they look messy.

Have any of you ever tried this mascara? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

Transitioning to Vegan/Plant Based Diet

So over the past few years I have really been becoming more conscious of what I consume.  Over 3 and a half years ago I decided to cut meat out of my diet completely, I haven’t missed it all.  I know that initial transition can be harder for some, but for me it was rather easy.  I was never a huge carnivore so once I put my mind to it I was able to cut meat out with no problem.  I did still eat seafood on occasion.  I think I kept the seafood in my diet more for the fact of making things easy.  When you go to most restaurants there is usually always some sort of seafood to order or if you go to eat at someones home and they know you do not eat meat but eat seafood then it makes it easier for them to prepare a meal you can eat.  Also, my husband is not on the same path as me food wise and still loves his meat, which is fine, to each their own, so eating seafood made it easier for us to have meals together too.

I finally made the push this past week to stop making excuses and start my journey towards a plant based diet.  Right now I have been cutting out all dairy, eggs, and of course seafood.  I think most people get scared when they hear the word Vegan and think, “Jeez, what do they eat, just fruits and veggies?!”  Well that is partially true but I think that the way society has become and the way everything has been made to be ‘on the go’ and ‘for convenience’ a lot of people have lost the desire for the healthy foods.  I made this wonderful Soba noodle meal last night that even my carnivore eating husband enjoyed.

What pushed me in this direction you may ask? Well, I have watched and read about the food industry.  It is sad how the norm is now soda and chemically ridden foods in almost every american home.  Most people do not think twice when having a soda with their meal, just the way the giant corporations that control our food intake want it to be.  If you take the time to do your research you will be alarmed to see how many chemicals are in the foods that most Americans keep stocked in their homes.  If you are interested in learning more I can recommend a few really eye opening documentaries that really helped me kick start my journey.  Forks over Knives, Cowspiracy, Food Matters, Fed Up, and Food, Inc. are just some of the documentaries out there trying to spread the word.  I have talked about this topic with a lot of people and I know that not everyone sees things the same way, and that is totally fine.  I am not trying to push this onto anyone or make them change their views overnight.  I am doing this for those who are curious and want to do their own research before making such a life changing decision.  As I said before, my husband still eats meat and I do not see him making a switch immediately either.

With all that said I want to share the Soba noodle recipe I made last night as well as some of the vegan/plant based foodies I follow who help out soo much when it comes to making this change!

You can find this Soba noodle recipe here!

Some of my go to sites for finding healthy vegan/plant based foods are: Kris Carr, Food Matters, Rawfully Organic, and of course you can’t go wrong with Pinterest or even just google if you are looking for a specific recipe to try.

So with starting this transition I plan to eventually become completely plant based.  The main difference with Vegan and Plant based diets is that technically with a Vegan diet you can still eat Oreos (ya, not dairy like you may have thought..just all chemicals-yuk!) but when you are eating completely Plant based you cut out processed foods and eat a whole foods diet.  It is something that takes a lot of work and time but I do have high hopes of making this a permanent transition.  I currently do not eat any big name brands and I have lost any desire for most of those foods just from not consuming them for so many years. I hope that sharing this helps and I would love feedback from others who are making the same journey!

Any tips you can share for going vegan/plant based??

Who doesn’t love a good wedding?!

I just love weddings. Nothing is more special then the love that two people have for each other.  I get so excited to see how each couple decides to celebrate.  I have been to and been a bridesmaid in a number of weddings and each one is always so different and unique.  Being married just a year this past August, I really grew to appreciate the entire wedding processes since I have been through it all myself.  The wedding I attended this past weekend was for a childhood friend.  She looked absolutely STUNNING.  Her dress was just so perfect for her frame, she looked like a princess.  The band was wonderful, decor was so pretty.  I think her dream day turned out just as she planned.

I was not in this wedding but decided to wear a long dress since it was a black tie optional wedding.  I actually got this dress last year to wear as my bridesmaid dress in my best friend Lauren’s wedding.  Lauren let us all pick out our own long grey (any shade of grey) dress and it worked out soo well!  I loved the dress so much that I figured I might as well get one more use out of it.  It is so flattering and comfortable.  I was getting compliments all night on it.  I cannot remember the designer but I got it at Lord & Taylor and it wasn’t that expensive.  Here are the only pictures I got from the night (I can be so bad at remembering to take pictures!).
